Update – Rank High and Fast in Google in a Competitive Niche – Post 4

Update on the fast and furious ranking in Google project – Post 4.

Post 1 of the series is here.
Post 2 here.
Post 3 here.

And post 5 is here.

Post 6 here.

I’ve been monitoring the progress of three different kwds, although I’m mainly focused on the one kwd – the one with 450k + global searches a month in Google, in terms of whacking it with backlinks – straight to money site, straight to the home page.

The “biggie” – I’ve lost it in Scroogle.org. I saw it a couple of days ago at 213th, but since then its disappeared, which is not unusual when a kwd is dancing around a lot in the rankings. How about Google US using the Google AdWord set of tools to assess rankings? Ah, got it, finally! 84. Wow – that’s really exciting!!

Although the ranking is really cool to witness – I’ve been backlinking this fresh domain for only 10 days now, the main thing is – Google have not penalized it (yet) and nor have they penalized the site as a whole – quite the contrary…

The kwd with 8.1k global search that I’m monitoring fairly closely is now ranking 11th according to Google US – that’s using the Google AdWords kwd tool to assess rankings for the US as a whole.

Ouch! That caught me by surprise – I’ve yet to monetize the site! I’ll just pop some AdSense on the website for now and see how that fares. I can use some Clickbank products for the ”biggie” kwd phrase, but I don’t believe there are any that match up with this kwd that’s currently ranking 11th.

The other kwd I’m monitoring has just less than 3k global search in Goog a month, and that’s sitting at 39th. Kinda boring, but then this particular post only went live on the site about 6 days ago and has only received a few backlinks.

So, what can be taken so far from this ranking in Goog exercise? So far so good!

Even with that early blitz with the 75 Web2′s going up – all with the same anchor text (and that was a mistake – it was a Fiverr gig and I was supposed to only get 30 Web2′s) its still panning out pretty well. I think what’s key here is this – once you start backlinking fast, you have to keep up that pace. If I’d not backlinked for a few days after that minor Web2 blitzkrieg, I suspect that Goog would have thumped my site. But due to the continued momentum, all appears to be well with the rankings world – at least for the time being.

Here’s my diary of backlinking events since I wrote up the previous post (that post you can find here – Post 3).

4 November

Submitted 100 links (18 bucks) to Directory Maximizer – all pointing to the home page with 5 variations of the main kwd, to be dripped over a 7 day period. Sidenote about Directory Maximizer – I advise that if you do use this service (and its a good service!) do not use the paid-for high PR directory service. Google can sniff those paid-for links out, and if they do, your site could very well be sunk!

First ranking found, other than the exact match domain name. Ranking 34th (according to Scroogle.org) for kwd term that receives 8.1k global searches a month in Google. No top 100 rankings as of yet for main kwd phrase (451k global monthly search in Goog – exact phrase).

5 November

I’ve been struggling with BMR writers recently so my desired schedule of 7 – 10 posts per day has in fact dropped to a mere 4 posts per day on average. But I’m patently aware that I need to mix up the anchor text for the main kwd phrase, after receiving 75 web2 links all in one day from that Fiverr gig, and all using the main kwd phrase as anchor text. Thus I’ve been writing a few BMR posts myself (grinding all over again then icon wink Update Rank High and Fast in Google in a Competitive Niche Post 4 ) and have also hired another writer on BMR to take care of some of the backlog for this domain. Expensive business!

Added Bookmarks via SocialADR to home page. In all, I’ve had around 124 SocialADR bookmarks from this one addition to the service within 3.5 days. Happy with that!

I tried to change a couple of existing ezine articles to link to home page on this site, but their terms of service no longer allow for this. Previously, you could link the bio box anchors to sites that were not related to the actual article, but this is no longer the case – the anchor links have to be related to the article.

Another page of content was “dripped” onto the money site, making that 6 pages of content thus far in all. Still 2 more to go and I’ll have to get some more written up to keep the stite “fresh”.

November 6

Fiverr – User: Rinchan86 – produce a video up to two minutes long (after which I shall get another Fiverr service provider to publish it) on either a product or a website in general. I simply took an article from my site and made that into a script for the video – simple! Completed within a day and a really good video she’s made for me too!

Fiverr – User: Robinh84 – 15 Diggs, 15 Tweets, and 10 Facebook Likes. This time on an inner page on the site. Order placed 6 Nov, completed within 2 days. Job completed with satisfaction – 5 extra Diggs provided and 5 extra Tweets also.

Changed a previous Squidoo lens over to the new website – this lens has been published for ages to its a “safe” link in that there is little chance the lens will disappear. 3 links added – one to home page with anchor mix, and 2 to inner pages with anchor text mix. Seems, unlike ezine articles, Squidoo still accept this sort of anchor link change, even though its unrelated to the content of the original article.

Submitted an inner page to SocialADR for bookmarking. I’ve had around 85 bookmarks from this SocialADR submission thus far, within 2.5 days. Good going!

8 November
Found out my main kwd phrase is ranking at 213 in Scroogle’s Google. Not ideal but hey – its ranking and looks like its not been smacked in the teeth with a ranking penalty, which is part of the reason for doing this project in the first place – to find out if you can whack a lot of backlinks at a fresh domain, and still achieve rankings without suffering a penalty.

Other rankings for other secondary kwds (according to Scroogle.org): 39 and 23.

Fiverr – User: JediMarketer – submit a video to 15 video sites, with PageRank 1 through 9. Now, most Fiverr gigs offer to submit to more video sites than this one, but I opted for the 15 sites because these are powerful links and I’d prefer to take fewer of them all in one go rather than more of them. I shall be using the same video creator as previously (Rinchan68) to provide more videos and will submit them to more video sites in future. Its a good way to mix up the anchor text of the link you get – use more videos, but submit them to less video sites.

Feedback on JediMarketer – order was completed within 2 days, with these further benefits to what was actually advertised…
I have additionally, created a mass RSS link with all the links turned into one, submitted the link to over 23 RSS directories and pinged them. Last but not least I indexed the videos using a meta indexer that submits your links to over 176 directories. icon smile Update Rank High and Fast in Google in a Competitive Niche Post 4

November 9 (its now Nov 10th in my part of the world but I’ll just leave it at the 9th since its early morning and I’ve yet to do any work today)

Added spun article (540 words, with 59% uniqueness) to Backlinks Genie to make Web2′s. The Genie “system” says you get 10 Web2′s but normally you get between 15 and 20 (in this particular case, I got 29 Web2′s, which is fantastic!) so its worth taking some care with this if you are linking straight back to a money site. In this case however, that’s ideal – I’ll be happy with 15 – 20 Web2 links.

I’ve checked the rankings early this morning, and here we go…
The “biggie” 450k+ global search - 84th in Goog US (using the Goog AdWords ranking tool which I find is pretty accurate on the whole).
The 8.1k global search kwd – 11th in Goog US.
The < 3k global search kwd – 39th in Goog US.

More updates to come in the next few days.

WOW … Great news … Glad you have not been slapped by Goog.

84 on a term that is receiving that much traffic this early in to the project is awesome :) . It looks like your doing a great job mixing it up on what type of linking your getting which I am sure goog loves. I will have to look into directory maximizer as that looks very interesting. Thanks for this case study Joseph it is proving to be a very good learning experience and I am excited we get to share it with you. Sleep well you will need the rest to keep up this pace of backlinking … 8.1k ranking at # 11 this early is pretty sweet too … Hopefully with some adsense on there that keyword will help fund the projects upcoming backlinking

This is exciting to me! :) Man im going to go after a mod. difficuly niche i tried to tackle back before i new anything about seo and failed miserably. Now i really think i can do it, so im going to work on that soon. I give it 3 months if i build a consistantly, diverse stream of backlinks and add.plenty of.content. So far your experiment is coming along nice! Thanks for keeping us updated.

Yup, happy with those current rankings Blake – very happy, in fact!! Not to say that Goog will not catch up with me of course – that could happen at any moment. Nevertheless, its very encouraging to see the current standings. Would be nice to see some AdSense income, but would not surprise me if clicks were few and far between – I can never really figure out AdSense – it constantly seems to go against what makes sense to me. But once I get time to have a look at what’s available (I’ll spend some time checking out other sites in this niche and see how they monetize, then in times to come – providing the rankings keep improving – I’ll start on the list building which will be key), if AdSense turns out to be a dud like it so often does, then I’ll happily swap it out for something more kwd focused.

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 1:47 am

Too soon to say if this is gonna work or not Casey, but so far its looking real good! And yes, if I can do it, so can you, and its made easier with my comments about the good Fiverr gigs and the other stuff I’m using to backlink. Not to say its cheap however – its not. But if the rankings do materialize then the potential for making a really great return on original investment could turn out to be awesome! Imagine – a top ten ranking for a kwd phrase with 450k global search volume a month, in a very hot niche that is a fantastic selling niche which focuses on a desperate market!! Enough of that from me – I don’t want to be pushing my “luck” overly now, do I!

Blake G. November 10, 2011 at 1:53 am

Yea I have not messed with Adsense yet but I am about to sign up for an account . I was recommended a plugin called “Whydowork adsense” that is suppose to make your life a lot easier when dealing with it. Disclaimer: I have not tried it myself so this is just hearsay really :)

Jim November 10, 2011 at 2:30 am

“WhyDoWork Adsense” is actually alright. If you’re not planning on selling the site then Clickbump is really worth looking into, even at the $17 dollar theme. Excellent product for Adsense imo.

At the risk of googol coming and banning me, I have to say I’m pretty disappointed in the income. I must be missing something. For example my Coffee maker site CPC is WAY WAY off from what one would expect after researching the CPC and even contextual CPC. I get about 25% of what they say a click is worth! And I checked all my comp using proxies and my adds are identical.

Anyway enough ranting…I just see adsense sites for sale making $100 a month and yet I get the 20-30 dollar ones and I get more traffic :P thats way of it isn’t it?

In any case, I hope you drop the adsense Jo :) LOL I want to see how you decide to monetise the site, because I’m really looking for ways other than adsense!

Great rankings and good luck!

I tried that plugin some time ago Blake. Can’t remember how I got on with it :-) I use a paid-for plugin called WP-Easy ads which was developed by Paul Forcey. Suits my needs well cos its so, so simple!

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 3:23 am

Jim – regards your cpc on the coffee site – are you basing this cpc on the Goog AdWord kwd tool stats or something similar? Its normal to see only a quarter to a third payout of that figure, since Goog take most of it for themselves.

I may work adsense on this fast and furious ranking project site, for a while anyhow – to see if I do get some clicks. But the other one – the one I just purchased, chances are I will stick with Amazon. I’m gonna make the site public on my blog anyhow, so its unwise to use AdSense on it in this case. So Amazon it will be for now, with a view to finding something better in future in terms of the fact that the offer is there for higher payouts than the poxy little amount that Amazon does.

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 4:27 am

Here’s a real dumb thing – my main kwd (450k + search a month in Goog) is ranking in 9th position in Yahoo. Fine – you think that’s real cool, right? But no – the wrong page is ranking for the kwd – its not the home page, its one of the inner pages. So the site is now getting rather a good number of visitors from Yahoo, but its not converting due to the “wrong” page ranking in the top ten. So much for Yahoo’s algorithm being better than Googles!

But what’s more – the site has a top spot ranking in Yahoo Search for the term that receives 8.1k search a month in Google.

Okay – any money from AdSense yet?

NONE! Does this mean that AdSense is going to fail here altogether? Such a hi end niche with an absolute ton of desperate folks, and yet AdSense appears to be failing to respond to their needs.

Hmmm… I think its time that Google penalized and demoted AdSense instead of demoting so many really good websites!!!

Jim November 10, 2011 at 4:30 am

Yes goog does take some for themselves, but generally that is 32% and the publisher gets 68%. So if I’m getting roughly a third, then the TRUE CPC is anywhere between 60 cents and 1 dollar, since I’m getting such a paltry sum (20-60 cents per click) but contextual and Adwords reports close to $3 for nearly all the keywords.

What does this tell me? Don’t trust GKT!!! lol which I hear a lot anyway. And besides, one of my main keywords supposedly averages 4400 a month, and I rank third (above Amazon! according to scroogle) and yet two other keywords get more search traffic lol

I will stick to MFA sites though until I get accepted to CPA sites and/or broaden my horizons when it comes to monetization.

I am finding ranking (small sample size though) to be easy, its the making money once I’m ranking that boggles me. If all my eggs were in the affiliate basket I may not mind, but the adsense basket….well damn thats just looking for scrambled-eggs-really-made-from-low-quality-powdered-egg-product :)
Jim recently posted..Keurig Single Serve Coffee Makers

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 4:45 am

Jim, also in-part, the payout depends on how the site visitor finds your webpage. If they are to perform an exact match search to the kwd you are ranking for (apparently) then you get paid more. If they are to find your webpage via an alternative way – whatever that may be – apparently you get paid less since the “quality” of the search is “less”. Does this make much sense at all? If not, go bang on Goog’s door. AdSense really baffles me as does most things that Goog put into practice ;-)

And you think it will get easier with affiliate sales? Hmmm… this often baffles me also, LOL! You get a hi end Clickbank product on your home page and you start gaining the rankings, but you find that although folks are clickin on the damn product link, they ain’t buying the thing (even though the product owner claims a click thru to buying ratio of 10%…). And CPA’s… hmmm… yup, I can go on about them too – you set up a top notch fully optimized home page in a very much desperate market, you get some good rankings and thus some good traffic daily – guess what – you don’t make a single flippin sale for weeks and weeks. HUH???

I say this often… who ever said that the IM game was EASY???

TomL November 10, 2011 at 4:55 am

Joseph,

I’ve never heard or thought that its a bad thing to submit your links to paid directories. If that was true… Google would definitely penalize everybody who has a Yahoo directory link but that’s definitely not the case.

Getting that one might be tricky though as they can keep your money whether you’re accepted or not. Don’t see why it would be different with any of the other ones. I’ve gotten high pr directory links which I paid for and use them as a tier 2 without any problems.

Nice to see that you’re ranking well for these.

I noticed that Pat Flynn is also talking about buying up a website and seeing if he can bring up the income. Seems he bit your idea… lol.

Regards,

TomL

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 5:23 am

Hey Tom – something I read a few weeks back actually – about buying links such as directory links with hi PR. The article I read was intelligent and laid out a pretty solid argument. I’m not saying that everyone will get dumped for doing that, but there does appear to be something of a risk. Fine – Yahoo directory and DMOZ are paid for and there is no repercussions for using those links – no argument can be made against that. Nevertheless, unless I used paid for hi PR links as tier 2 such as you are doing, I will choose to avoid them in future. I’ve used them before (occasionally), and I got a sneaking feeling this contributed to my site been penalized. Maybe that is incorrect, but more evidence seems to be pointing in this direction as time progresses.

Yeah, Trevor Chapman commented on here about Pat doing a similar thing. Ah well – it matters not. I really just wanna get this site up and running (once the domain name filters out of the previous account – damn, its so slow!) and make some half decent money from it. If everyone chooses to run off to Pat’s blog and watch him make another million, then what can I do – other than to line my own pockets regardless ;-)

TomL November 10, 2011 at 5:31 am

Joseph,

What you’re saying does make sense though as Google does state in its TOS that it well penalize anyone purchasing links… and directories are no different.

Yahoo is owned by Microsoft so as any other huge corporation they aren’t bound by the rules which we need to obey… lol.

I’ll definitely think twice before purchasing any high pr directory submissions from now on.

TomL recently posted..My Site’s Sandboxed! Why Does Google Hate Me?

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 5:41 am

Agreed on that point Tom, and that’s what I was thinking when I initially read that article about purchasing hi PR directory links and backlinking to a money site. However – as you said – how come you never hear that anyone gets penalized when they purchase a DMOZ or Yahoo Directory link??? Is this another case of Google having a double set of rules just to confuse everyone? After all, if you have such a “hi – end” link to your site, you are supposed to be god-like. Well, okay, maybe not god-like as only Google can be described as the god of all gods. So how’z about “angelic-like” instead :-) This is peculiar!

Jim November 10, 2011 at 6:05 am

“I say this often… who ever said that the IM game was EASY???”

What? I’ve bought 100+ WSO’s that said it was easy money guaranteed! They all make 35k a week and outsource everything from keyword research to content to backlinks all on Fiverr. And all their CPA’s convert at 20% I’ll have you know, and ranking is easy even with only 50 words of high quality unique content!

If I was one of those greasy folks I’d wrap up all your advice over the last while and toss it in a WSO :) “Joseph Archibalds Sure Fire Way To Super Easy Residual Income Without Lifting A Finger While Drinking Gnat’s Piss”. Hm. Sadly I bet I could sell that :) Would have more honest and useful info than the other WSO’s so I doubt they’d allow it :)

Honestly I almost believed a few CPA’s would generate more income but you’re right, thats pretty naive! Thanks for the insight Jo :) Nevermind the money, this IM stuff is just FUN! (yes I’m still a noob :) )

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 7:01 am

Jim – hilarious!! ;-) :-)

Joseph Archibalds Sure Fire Way To Super Easy Residual Income Without Lifting A Finger While Drinking Gnat’s Piss

I’d have to lift my hand to drink my gnats pee – although I guess I could get one of those extra long straws, couldn’t I ;-)

Maybe there is a market for that – The extra long gnats piss drinkers straw – perfect for those who don’t wish to lift a finger whilst making 35k a week online!!!

You are quite right tho – the IM game can be a whole lot of fun, but its even more fun when you are seeing good profits from your endevours/endeavors/endeavours (please pick the right spelling cos I have no idea). CPA’s are – like other monetization strategies – a numbers game. But at the same time, why so? Surely you can be savvy enough to make conversions from a mere 30 site visitors a day. Why should it be necessary to have to have 3000 visitors a day to a site before you get a single conversion. That simply does not sit well with me.

Michal November 10, 2011 at 8:05 am

Great update Joseph. It is so inspiring. I really like this video publishing, which seems to be quite cool. Being from the Czech Republic I am quite surprised that on international IM market people still use the good old techniques such as directory submissions, article marketing, etc. I am also surprised to see that it seems to work here. In the Czech Republic SEO gurus say article marketing and directory submissions are worthless :) . But the reason maybe the fact that they want to earn more money by performing PPC management services than SEO.

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 8:32 am

Thanks Michal! I tried video publishing before thinking it would give a real nice boost to rankings of the site in question. Erm nope – the site got smacked by Google, LOL! I can laugh about it now, but it was painful to witness at the time. Be careful if you choose to take this route, is all I’ll say. As mentioned in my post write up – I chose a Fiverr gig that would submit a to a mere 15 video sites, rather than 20 – 30 sites. Then I will simply repeat this over a few times over the coming weeks.

Directory submissions and article marketing do still work and they work well too. Maybe not as well as they used to do in the dark ages some 5 years ago or so but there is surely a place for them in an SEO campaign of this nature. As you say – and I believe you are right – folks downgrade these techniques thoroughly and often the reason for that is they want you to spend money on their more “high tech” services. I’ll most probably use these methods for as long as I’m doing SEO, regardless what the doomsters wanna say about it ;-)

I always say – and it’s true – that in Internet you don’t MAKE money. You EARN it with hard work. And whoever says the opposite is a lying bast***
It’s sad that so many people believe them.

Joseph,
so far it seems that pace is very important for backlinking. If you go fast, go fast all the way. If you go slow, go slow all the way. Don’t stop and don’t change your pace suddenly or uncle G will notice.

Regards to pace/volume – yes, this surely seems to be one of the keys Cristina – maintain a certain pace (or up the pace slowly). Added to that – mix up the anchor text, and use a variety of different sources to obtain the backlinks. More fun to come (I hope!)…

Random question totally unrelated to the new post, but at what point do you up your BMR output Joe? I went from 1 per day, to 1-3 per day, and I want to keep building momentum because i’m climbing fast and furious, but i don’t want to stall out.
Brendan recently posted..True Protein Discount Code Video!

Joseph November 10, 2011 at 2:50 pm

I tend to hang up my BMR gloves around about the 300 post mark Brendan. Depends though – if you can find a few related categories within BMR, then you can go for longer. However, if you are using BMR alone, you really have to take care cos that can be found out by the powers that be. Its wise to start mixing things up as you progress, unless you are looking to sell up fairly early on. In which case, BMR is probably fine on its own – dependant of course on how strong your competition is.

Brendan November 10, 2011 at 3:40 pm

I’ll shoot you an email about it Joe. It’s a pretty unorthodox case.

I can answer it here for the most part blake. I just write all of the posts myself and try to write 3 per day and it takes 1-3 of them right now so i am slowly building up in case I miss days. It’s easy to find small articles on your chosen keyword online to paraphrase in your own words (not that I condone or advise such behavior ;) ).

Joseph November 12, 2011 at 4:22 am

Update today on the main kwd’s ranking: up from 84th a couple of days back to 44 today. This funny technique of blasting a new site to bits with backlinks seems to be working nicely. Will it continue to work? All will soon be revealed to us…

Jim November 12, 2011 at 6:42 am

Wow great job so far Jo. I can’t even get 1k keywords to rank that fast lol and they have pretty much zero competition!
All in all this certainly gives some ideas for more backlinks, however I’m inclined to wait and use them when the domain is aged and has some links already lol.
Bit of a pansy :)

Joseph November 12, 2011 at 7:23 am

There’s always room for the pansies Jim ;-) Furthermore, its still early days and I dare not invest too much on the site just yet in case it all goes wrong. I’m wondering now if this sort of thing would also work on those kwds/niches where the competition is not nearly as tough as this one. Food for thought – maybe that should be the next experiment. I do think though that it would be far more tricky to stay under the Goog rankings radar in this case, so chances are it would flop before it got out of the starting blocks.

Wow! I really admire your writing style. Every time I read a blog post, it is something rewritten from several other articles for the sake of posting. However, you are writing your own experiences and that too in such a detailed fashion. And secondly it is quite interesting to know how you are ranking high on Google with your hard earned internet marketing experience. While there are several newbies struggling to earn some money on the internet, your site acts as an important guide for those.

Hi Hendrik, thank you kindly for your feedback! Yeah, I simply write “from the heart”. If I were to do as you mentioned in your comment – rewrite from other people’s articles and blog posts, I’d very soon get as bored as my readers would. Another update on this experiment/project should be up on the blog later today.

Thanks Hendrik!

Hey Joseph,

Thanks for all this info, there’s lots of details here that many others just don’t give away – trade secrets and all that I presume.

A question though – here you mention a meta indexer that submits to 176 directories – this is new to me, is the meta indexer a plugin or something?

Also, where did you find the 23 rss directories, I have only found a couple that are still working?

Cheers!

Mungo – my pleasure!

Erm – meta indexer? No idea – I simply “bought” into the service and let them perform the work. I really don’t care much about how they get it done as long as they stick closely to their original spec – that’s a job done for me! Best way to find out about this is to contact the seller on Fiverr – JediMarketer.

Thanks Mungo!
