How to do Keyword Research – Video 1

by Joseph on April 18, 2011

Here is the first video for those who are interested in joining in with the affiliate dream list and finding out about a plethora of “hot”, almost untouched products to affiliate for.

This video is based on how I do keyword research and how I will be carrying out my keyword research for these products. So, the first video is purely based on the use of Google AdWords Keyword Tool, and figuring out what sort of keywords I would wish to focus my efforts on.

The next video, which will be up and coming very soon, will be based on the next phase of keyword research – assessing your competition.

I will not be getting a transcription for these videos done, unless there is a demand for that. If you need a transcription, then do please let me know.

If you have any questions, do also let me know.

Oh, and one more thing for now. I know that those who have subscribed to the optin (thanks for doing so!) will be raring to get going. The first product website is still being developed, but that should be ready by Wednesday of this week, fingers crossed! We are still tying everything together while the website is nearing final stages of completion. I’ll keep you updated on this.

Video time: 12mins 20seconds

The second video – how to assess your true Google competition – is here.

Well Sam, we’ve yet to see if this “style” of kwd research pans out better than aiming at the shorter tailed higher searched for kwd phrases. But I sense that this method will prove to be highly successful, providing there is enough “good” long tails associated with the product and the specified markets to be targeted. This method suits those who enjoy on-site content generation, rather than off-site mass backlinking.

The older I get (;-)) the less I like this concept of mass backlinking. It just seems all wrong to me now, and I would have a guess that Google will follow suit with me on that in times to come.

Watch this space, so to speak…

Thanks for your feedback!

Hey Shakil, thanks for popping by!

Some things I keep my word with, other things slip through the net, on occasion. Ah well, such is life. Some things I would love to pick up on later, when the situation is more appropriate…

That’s really good to hear about your blog – I presume its your blog to which you are referring?

Patience as they say is a virtue, but patience is not always the key to a winning formula, not in the IM game, anyhow. But its good to know that patience has paid off for you here, Shakil!

Thanks for the post Joseph! Another free information to store in my memory bank! But honestly, I don’t perform keyword research. (Just interested to know about it). My task as a writer is just to write articles and it’s my VA who dictates to me what keyword/s to use. I attempted to ask her about researching for keywords but I guess she has to attend to more important SEO assignments. (There’s no resentment on that.) Glad that I came across your video. Thanks a lot!

Oh, I see Shakil! Oh well, let’s hope then that those visitors are now turning into buyers and not just enjoying the look and feel of the site! Seeing sales?

Joseph April 19, 2011 at 6:04 am

Hi Charlene, well you got me there – you do the writing and your VA does the keyword research… This is very unusual!

What are you paying your VA then? Someone who is good/very good at keyword research could/should be worth their weight in gold! Most folks who do keyword research get it all wrong, and I was no exception to that it has to be said. I could rank top 5 in Google for a whole variety of keyword phrases, but I was still making peanuts income – bad keyword choice, simple as that!

Again, if you can perform keyword research very well, you are streets ahead of most of the folks in this game!

Thanks Charlene,
Joseph

Great video Joseph.
For what I have understood, the key points are:
1. We log in our Adwords account to be sure we get a high number of results. If we don’t log we get only 100
2. We have to be sure we mark “Exact” match, otherwise the results could be not reliable
3. We forget about the highest number of searches and we focus in smaller ones which probably are less crowded (=easier to rank for this “smaller” keywords)
4. We focus on keywords that include the word “product” because they are more likely to convert well. The chances of people who search for a product to [fix back pain, in this case], buying our product are high.

Did I forget anything important?

Looking forward to the next video.

Thanks for the feedback Cristina!

1. Yes – without logging in to AdWords/AdSense (I think AdSense account too) you only get the miniumum keyword range.
2. Without ticking “Exact” match, your results will be way out and not worthy of your attention.
3. This depends on you, really. But its one approach which can be highly successful, and a great approach to take for someone who is less experienced. It does depend a lot on the chosen niche, but for this particular one, it looks to be ideal!
4. The word “product” in the keyword phrase to be targeted is not necessary. In this example I used “back pain products” but that was only for this example. If you put yourself in the mind of the potential buyer and ask the questions that they would be asking, then you are most certainly on the right track. In this case, you would be well on the right track because “back pain products” is ideal!

The next video is on here now Cristina. Hope you can see the post okay? I’ll be “issuing” a fairly comprehensive list of keyword phrases that I would strongly consider targeting myself for this product. That will be in the next day, and will be available only to those who have opted in to the pop-up. There is about 70 or 80 or more additional kwd phrases on that list to help anyone who needs a little direction in choosing appropriate kwd phrases.

Along with that list, will be the address of the site in question, which I’m hoping will be near to completion – as near as is necessary anyhow. No doubt you’re aware of progress on that, right? ;-)

Gday Joseph,
I love your work!

I’m evaluating top 10 results and the Yahoo Directory listing is the only thing that worries me, meaning 9 out of 10 have a Yahoo Directory listing, PR0s and 0 links search volume 2600 , would you still maybe consider that niche? Would it be just a bit more difficult to succeed, or a LOT harder?

Regards,
Marcelo

Hello Marcelo, thanks for your feedback!

I would not worry about the Yahoo Directory listings one little bit! You have to wonder how much value Google confer on such listings now – its a paid-for link after all, and that’s a no-no in the Google Bible. If the PR’s are generally 0 and the backlinks are showing up as very low too – sounds like you’ve a good shot at getting hi in the rankings Marcelo – so, good luck!!
