[Note from Joseph: as you'll see in the author bio, Austin writes for Plagspotter.com and as such you will of course sense he possesses something of a biased point of view. Nevertheless, I've played around with the Plagspotter software and it's pretty neat. Well worth using - I mean it's free, so why would you not utilize it's capabilities to enhance your business...]

PlagSpotter is a new plagiarism content checker which allows you to detect articles which utilize duplicate content on the internet. The software is free and with it you can uncover websites that are potentially hurting your site’s authority and reputation.

The vast majority of online advertisement providers are against duplicate marketing content and may penalize your website if they think you are involved. Google also has a strong stance on this issue and often bans links from websites that host duplicate content. With plagiarism check software like Plagspotter you can find out which websites are copying your content, and if the situation is bad then you can then take action against these sites and keep your site’s reputation and presence safe.

Using PlagSpotter

It is easy to begin with PlagSpotter, and no account sign-up is required. The PlagSpotter homepage lets you type in the URL of a website you want to check, and then searches that website for duplicate content. You can only type in URLs and not local computer content, and you cannot search pages that are not directly accessible.

Once the search has finished you will be taken to a results page. This page shows you whether any duplicate content has been detected, which will be highlighted, and gives you a percentage of non-unique content overall on that page. If you click on the highlighted text you are given a list of sources on the right hand side, which you can click on and go to check for yourself.

The Verdict

This plagiarism check software is very sensitive in detecting duplicate content. That is good, but it also means that many false positives are detected. This is something of a downside, but it is not too difficult to work your way around these false positives.

I was impressed at the speed and rigor of the software, and the overall performance. It’s a new check tool on the market and will no doubt have a number of initial issues, but as a free online tool it is very convenient and has excellent potential for the future, and I would definitely say it is the best free check tool of its kind. I’ll be keeping a close eye on this software – it may even begin to compete with the well-known and well-established plagiarism checker CopyScape. All in all I would certainly recommend it.

Duped by Dupe Content – Article Marketing and DUPLICATE CONTENT

If I could swear vulgarity then maybe now would be the moment! And why? Cos I’m battling with link coding for the Twilight Posterz site which I don’t enjoy at all and I’m rubbish at cos its too logical for my illogical and small brain.
But, I hear you say, you got your programmer to work it out, right?

Yes, but the problem is now that even though the links are all directing to AllPosters website, and to the specific posters too, which is cool, they do not have my affiliate link in them. Thus no commission for any purchases.

I’m not spending any longer on it though. I hate it with a vengeance!

Thus onto something else a bit more up my tree.

I’ve just been asked a question by a young lady over on the Warrior Forum Challenge thread about article marketing. So I thought rather than me answering it over on there, I’ll just bring the question over to here and provide my take on this subject. So here is the question from Aira

On-Page SEO Techniques – How to Win at On-Page SEO

I updated my website at http://twilightposterz.com/

Well, not quite updated rather than posted some content to it. So its starting to look like a website now. Go have a look and do please give me feedback if you feel inclined. Again, I am no web programmer, I think that’s obvious, right?

I should discuss a bit about how I do on-page SEO, or at least did for this particular website.

The main thing for me was to get some fresh content. I don’t find writing about products in general to be particularly easy or fun. So what I decided to do was to bring in some posts from eBay.com re Twilight posters of course, and then spruce up the content a bit.

I will go back again and do more sprucing to ensure that this stuff is unique, particularly the home page (static page) of the site, as this is where my main keyword is and this is the page I am trying to rank for.

Try ranking a page where your content is not unique and you could be in for a hard struggle!

Its well worth the initial effort of gaining some uniqueness for your web content where you wish to try and rank for a particular keyword. otherwise, its very probable that the amount of backlinks you need will be a lot more than if your content is relatively unique.

How unique does it have to be? Not too sure is my answer to that. I’ve tried various techniques – change the first paragraph and last paragraph, change some sentences around, change some paragraphs around. Its a tough call but you can only really tell by trying it out for yourself.

However, if you are really keen on ranking a web page then I would suggest you go for a minimum of 50% unique. That should be just fine for Google and for the others too. That’s my experience anyhow.

After all, its totally impossible to write a fully unique article if you think about it. You would have to invent a new language!

You’ve heard about silo structures for sites etc. right? Well, this sort of thing bores me to tears and I switch off so fast as soon as I begin to read about it. So don’t ask me for a run-down of what it is and what it is not, thank you!

The Twilight Poster site only has 5 pages of content (I think tongue On Page SEO Techniques How to Win at On Page SEO) so the way I go about optimizing that bit more is to pop in links throughout the pages with my chosen keywords as hyper-text. Most of the links will go back to my home-page with a variety of hyper-text, and not just my main keyword. Some others will go to other relevant pages.

Nothing at all tricky here whatsoever, and lo-and-behold, very, very often I find that when I’m ranking top 5 or 10 for my keyword of choice, I’ve got another page of my site hanging on in the top rankings at the same time. I guess I must be doing something right here, right?

If I don’t get 2 pages in the top 10 then I will sometimes go back to the site in question and put in a few more hyper-text links from one page to another. Maybe just 3 or 4.

Certainly not an over-haul! Generally this will do the trick and I’ll see my newly-optimized page rising up nicely.

What else?

Of course you need to get your keywords in your title (or H1 tags if you prefer). I often captitalize these too. You know why? Cos if I’m ranking say at number 3 for a keyword and I have those precise keywords that have just been searched for all capitalized and also BOLDED by Google due to their relevancy in the search, then my site’s page is going to really stand out!

I’ve tried this myself a number of times. Often in a Google search I will forgo the top-ranked site if I see another site a few places below that have my precise search keywords bolded out by Google and CAPITALIZED by the web site owner.

I don’t always use this technique, it depends on the subject matter – the niche. If I sense it has to be treated with some delicacy then I may not place the page title in capital letters.

And ya, you should ensure you hyper-text your chosen keyword that you are trying to rank for. I kinda mentioned that before – just up there. So if I’m trying to rank for “pigeon food” then I would have to get those keywords in a link on my page. Fairly obvious stuff I know, but not to everyone. At one time not that long ago I would have been baffled by this!

Another thing which is not exactly on-page SEO… I try to make it that there are not many clickable things on the page other than where I want the page visitor to click. So this would be things like AdSense of course, maybe a search box if my site is large, my own hyper-text links, which really don’t go anyplace – just to my own site, or to an affiliate link which could be through an image or a plain text link.

Otherwise, I want my recent posts showing and perahps categories for a larger site. Occasionally pages, and its required that you insert a privacy policy link if you use AdSense as we all know.

Other than this, that would be it really. I don’t want folks clicking away from my site unless I’m producing really hot stuff and I know that they will come back anyhow. In this case its no bad thing to pop in some links to other websites that are offering your site visitor relevant info or whatever. It heightens the user experience, it really does.

If your own site is of good to excellent calibre, you should have no concern about popping in a few links to other good sites that will be helpful to the visitor. After all, this is what the internet is about – sharing good quality info with one another, agreed?

Image alt text is also a decent way of on-page optimizing. Its so easy now with WordPress that I shall not go into it.

If you’ve got problems with your own site regarding on-page optimization then do give me a shout. I’m no big time expert on it, but I can quickly pick up a few things that seem not quite right and I am very happy to provide pointers where I am able to do so!

I think that’s it for on-page SEO, although I’ve probably forgotten something. I just write all my posts off the top of my head so I do sometimes forget things. Old age, huh?

Duplicate Content Checker – How to Assess for Duplicate Content

DupeCop - Duplicate Content Checker

I only recommend products that I use myself!

If you do much in the way of article marketing or writing of any form of content for the internet then you may have to check for duplicate content on a fairly regular basis. Obviously we want to avoid duplicate content for a variety of reasons which depend upon what we are using our content for.

Say for example we wish to write a few articles for our new website. Now its all well and good to go to an article directory and grab a few good articles from there, keeping the links in the bio box intact of course. But, the problem is that the chances of ranking for those new web pages is not so good due to the fact that it is duplicate content. Of course we could rank highly for this type of content but when we are competing with possibly what could be hundreds of other pages of the same content then our work is going to be a lot tougher than would be for fresh, unique articles.

Thus, to ensure we give ourselves every fighting chance to rank highly in the search engines, it does make sense to check our content before we post it to our website or to article directories (ezinearticles.com will not accept content that is any less than around 60% unique), or to any where on the internet.

If you are writing fairly often then I suggest you pick up a really neat piece of software to check the uniqueness of your content for you. This piece of software – a duplicate content checker – is ideal if you habitually “borrow” articles from article directories or other websites and then re-write them. What you do is to simply compare the original article with your new, fresh version and the software will tell you precisely how unique it is. Furthermore, there is a cool little addition to it in that you can compare the uniqueness sentence by sentence, thus its easy to change a couple of words here and there to enhance the article over-all.

This article checker is called DupeCop. DupeCop is not necessary for everyone of course. If you write the occasional article or if you merely create your own content – a little bit here and a little bit there, then Dupecop is not really so important.

So how much? First 7 days count as a free trial, which is ample time to really give this software a whirl. There-after, it costs $5 a month. Money well spent? If you need to check your content for uniquness on a regular basis then I suspect that DupeCop is the best software around for that! Its what I use for my own sites and for my writing for my clients – almost every single time!

Actually, here is neat tip for you if you just want to make a general check of your article’s draft lens1303867module8505719photo ezine articles.jpg1204427295 300x249 Duplicate Content Checker How to Assess for Duplicate Contentuniqueness. Head to ezinearticles.com and sign into your account (if you have one – if not, then simply set one up). Then, take the article you wish to check for uniqueness and make a mock submission of it to ezinearticles.com. This means that you go through the motions of submitting as normal to ensure the article is indeed unique. Ezinearticles.com will check the article for you against their massive content database and immediately tell you if its unique or not – their quality guidelines I have found through my own testing, would appear to be around the 60% uniqueness level, before they will accept any article for publishing. And that level of uniqueness is perfectly ample for any form of internet writing and submission.

Obviously, if your content passes ezinearticles.com test for unique content, and you do not actually wish to submit to the directory, then you must go back into your account and delete the article before it is actually published! Pretty neat, right? A dupe checker for free!
