And here’s another freebie WordPress plugin (it’s technically speaking termed as a “widget” rather than a plugin) for all you WP plugin buffs out there. By the way, I do like the new WordPress.org update (3.5). The “Add Media” button at the top of the WordPress back office interface is a really nice extra for those who enjoy adding a number of images to their posts.
Up till now I’ve been happy to utilize the services of a basic related posts plugin. You know what that does, right? It adds links to what it “determines” to be the most closely related articles on your site to the one you post up. Hope that makes sense. Casey Dennison explains this more clearly in a recent guest post he did for me which is here.
Now, that’s just fine. You get text links and they look just fine.
But how’z about image links – wouldn’t that be better? If you do add images to your posts then using a plugin/ widget that shows an image as a link right at the base of your post is in my opinion better. It’s more enticing to the reader to click an image than it is to click a text link, or so I feel, particularly if the image is appealing.
The downside is this:
1. You may not have images on all your posts, in which case a blank box with a headline underneath shows up as the link to the related post.
2. You may be in the habit of using either somewhat unrelated images (unrelated to your post’s content) or you may be in the habit of using – for want of a better word – crappy images.
I tried out a few freebie plugins and they all worked fairly well but the one that performed the best for me was this one:
It’s simple to set up – very simple or I’d never use it. All you need to do is load the plugin as you do normally, then choose yes or no to “Show LinkWithin only on Single Posts“. Job done! By default, four image thumbnails show up for each post you create, as you will no doubt see just below here.
