Today, I thought I would write a post which is particularly relevant to all those folks who regularly read my blog but rarely if ever comment. That’s fine – I know we are not all the commenting “type”. Apparently, the average amount of comments received by a blog is only 1% of total traffic. Fortunately, this blog is quite a bit above that.
Anyhow, I received a brief email today from a gentleman who sometimes writes me to check that he’s on the right tracks. As you know, I do try to answer almost every single email I get – other than those great long book-like emails which I’m sorry to say I simply don’t manage to get around to making a reply to.
Here is the email I received this morning. The gents name I will leave out for reasons of privacy…
Email title: Awesome “THANK YOU”. (I actually thought it was spam, LOL!).
Hi there, Joseph.
Just wanted to thank you for your great work. You’ve inspired me and your blog posts and you answering my e-mails kept me going and I just realized that during last week I’ve made three sales of a product I’ve been affiliating. That’s an awesome feeling, to see that after a few months of work (4, actually) I actually have achieved something.
So thank you so much and please do keep up this great work you’re doing.
Cheers!
Now, in no way am I banging on my own drum and saying just how wonderful I am. Well, okay, I know I’m a top notch bloke/dude – I have to accept the truth after all
The point being that when I receive emails such as these, it makes my blog post writing all the more worthwhile. So please – everyone – do feel at liberty to flood my inbox with emails of praise because now and again an ego boost is just what the doctor ordered!
I want to say in return – thanks to everyone who reads my blog, regardless you choose not to comment! Comments are great and I love the interaction, but if you choose not to comment, then that’s cool too.
Blogging can be hard work, which is why I choose to only write a post when I’ve got something worthy to say – I shy away from hard work these days and much of what I do comes merely from inspiration, which makes life more of a joy!

On another note…
and in case you were not aware – and most of you probably are not… You may remember the Google project I started back in mid October whereby I set out to rank a very high level search term in Google’s top ten within a matter of a few months.
Just as a quick reminder – the main keyword phrase I chose receives 450,000 searches in Google each month on a Global basis (that’s exact searches, not broad or phrase searches).
You may also remember that after about 7 weeks, Google dumped some of my webpages from the rankings and I thought that was game over.
However, within a further 3 weeks, those webpages came back up in the rankings, so I decided to pick up the pieces behind the scenes and try to persevere with it.
Yesterday, I finally managed to crack top ten with the high end search term, although it is currently dancing around a little and sits back in 12th spot right now – as far as I can see, anyhow. This is in Google US according to the Goog Adwords Keyword Tool. Its actually ranking top ten in Canada and the UK I think, and probably a few other countries besides.
In all, its taken just less than 3 and a half months to gain this top ten ranking in Goog, for what is obviously a very competitive term indeed. (I did originally research the keyword phrase and I saw some weakness in the top ten, hence my reason for choosing it in the first place – keyword research is, erm… key!)
Thus, as you can see from my own work, its actually very possible to rank a very high end kwd phrase in Google by dumping a whole ton of backlinks on your webpage from the very beginning, even if some of your webpages do get penalized by the almighty Google.
Besides the high end term, I’ve also gained a whole gamut of top ten long tail rankings for the site, even though there are no more than about 18 pages of content on the domain.
Plus, one of my secondary terms with over 18k search is now sitting pretty in the top ten also, with another new term which receives 110,000 searches a month in Google placed in the high 20′s. I only began to focus on that particular term about 2 weeks ago. Previously, it was resting just outside the top 100.
I think one of the main messages here is this – don’t always presume that what you read about ranking in Google is actually true. Don’t be afraid to do your own experiments.
As you know, I’m the guy who does just this. I don’t take Google at “face value”, I do make a big effort to do my own trials, many of which I share with you on this blog. I don’t like sticking with run of the mill.
If some guru comes to me and tells me “Joseph, that does not work…” – I’m the guy who may well try to find a way to make it work. I don’t particularly like the word “CAN’T“.
Truth be told, very many of my projects fail. But some are very successful, such as this one. I don’t shy from failure.
You hear fairly regularly about scientists who failed time and time again at their projects, but finally – and regardless that everyone else is saying that they can’t – they do make a big break through and that break through brings them fame and fortune.
Well, although gaining Google rankings may not bring us fame, they can indeed bring us fortune and a great lifestyle to boot.
Thus I say to you – do not be afraid to do your own trials. Don’t shy from failure. Build up your knowledge base as to how others gain rankings and/or make money online, and then build on that knowledge by doing your own trials.
And don’t be afraid of failure. Failure is GOOD! Failure brings us a step closer to success, and success may be just around the next corner for you.

May I be the first to comment on this post Joseph?
I do have achieved something and you also 1 person that inspire and play a certain role in helping me in SEO even if I rarely comment and send email to you directly
Thank Joseph, Keep doing this great work.
Thank you kindly Sereyboth – I appreciate your taking the time to reply in this way!
All the best!
Joseph
Congrats again Joseph. For the results in this project but also for keep trying once and again.
The only way to learn how Google works is doing this kind of tests. They cost money, time, effort and when they fail you get almost nothing in return.
Not everybody can do it.
If it wasn’t for people like you the rest probably wouldn’t get anywhere.

This was a great post to wake up to in the morning! Just wanted to leave a comment and say that I find many of your posts inspiring and inspirational and I love the back and forth commenting that you tend to do on your site. I find you to be a “top notch bloke/dude” as well and have benefited from much of the information given on your site.
Keep writing and inspiring us all! I love the way you always seem to tell us about the good, the bad, and the ugly. Not many people do that.
Cheers!

Hi Joseph,
You are the best! I read many learning materials from so called “IM Gurus” and you are the one I know I can follow.
I started my venture and decided to make money online since 2003 but only 2011 I started to have confidence that I found the key. The key to rank a site properly. Joseph, you are the one who shared this key with me.
Before this, I heard that “The best advice is free”. Now I believe this statement is true. You help us without asking anything back from us. This is a good karma and I believe your online business will get better and better.
Ok, please allow me to say “THANK YOU” to you again.
Thanks Cristina! You are right – this is a tough old ball game to be playing since Goog keep changing the goal posts. You find something that works, and before you know it Goog changes the game plan all over. The only reason I do this trial and error stuff is that I’m thrilled by the thought of finding something that works and very few others actually know about.
I see it a little bit like the drug companies business model – they spend millions on testing out hundreds or perhaps thousands of drugs, and yet only a handful of them turn out to work. Nevertheless – the profits they generate from that handful of successes is plenty enough to generate huge profits. Risky game to be playing, but the upside can be extreme!
All my intended products for this year have been generated through trial and error – I’m now merely refining the processes to make them as workable as possible.
Interesting findings you have there Steve! And I like the quotes you’ve listed here – very apt and thoroughly relevant! Here are a few by Alexander Graham Bell (thought I’d keep things Scottish
)
- Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to a focus.
- Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing that we see too late the one that is open.
Harrison – what can I say in reply…? Thank you kindly for sharing your thoughts – you’ve put a big lump in my throat
Hi Tai – Sweetie Pie, thanks for your feedback! I’m the “dude” who likes to talk in face value mode – if its broken then it needs fixing and I’ll let everyone know about it. If it can’t be fixed, it needs to be dumped asap, and I’ll let folks know about it – even though its painful to sometimes discuss these things. If its working well, then again – I’ll let folks know about it. So, as you say – discussing the good, the bad, and the downright ugly, is all the discussion you’ll get on this blog.
Hope things are going well for you Tai!
Jo
You offered us so many interesting ideas and thoughts, that I have to think a little bit about this stuff. From failure to success is a great achievement for anyone.

Thanks so much Joe. This blog has really taken me places that I never thought I would be. Even though I am still working my day job, and loving it, these efforts have provided me financial freedom that I never could have imagined. I’ve been reinvesting everything that I have earned so far and I can’t wait to see what is going to happen when I start to feel alright with keeping some of it haha!
None of it would have been possible without this site. I hope some of the good karma you’re putting out in the world returns to you!

Brendan, I do hope you are right about the good karma!
I guess you could say I’m receiving the good karma now – my life is ten times better now than it was a few years ago!
Hi Becca, if you persevere with your online business you tend to see this happening – what appears to be a failure can turn around to real success. Its tough to keep going if you perceive failure however, so sometimes its best just to sit back and see what happens rather than continuing to invest heavily.
All the best!
Joseph
Congrats! I admire your being strong and tough. You deserve all of that from not even trying, not for once to give up.

Great post Joseph,
I agree with you 100% you have got to try and test things out for yourself. I myself hard look at what google is doing or saying as its content people want and like to read and not what google say. I also dont think I do anything that would get me banned so I dont bother following every word google says.
I had a few sales on two website with amazon but the funny thing I didnt even finish the blog I had a home page with content and link but the rest of the pages where blank and someone purchase products still. So now I am in the process of finishing my blog and creating backlinks as I want to see an increase in income next month and reach my goal.
Thanks again for sharing your tips and for inspiring myself as well as others. Going to have another read of your amazon 20 hours post.

Hi Joseph,
I know it’s been quite awhile since I’ve visited your blog but it’s got nothing to do with you my friend. I’ve been a very busy little bee… and making some good progress I might add. After receiving your email about your webinar being posted, I came here to download it and give some support to your blog while here. I can’t believe your topic for this post, it’s GREAT!
I thought that after all of my own failures and successes from working online, I would share my new slogan for everyone. Maybe someone will be inspired like your reader that sent you the email you’ve shared.
After having one of my ventures show good progress and provide some good returns, this exact sentence just popped in my head and I wrote it down. “Failure only means you have to persevere using different options until you succeed.”
It’s people like you that are out here that we turn to for guidance not only for your knowledge, but your honesty. I think everyone reading your blog will agree with me on that.
You’re doing a great job Joseph and I appreciate what you’re doing. Even when I’m buried in my own projects and unable to visit here regularly. I’m only an email away my friend. Keep up the good work!
Oh yea, sorry that I am one of the ‘book writers’. (lol)
I do appreciate your responses. Even when I need to ‘vent’. Thank you Joseph!
Hey Rick, yes, I know all about your recent trials and tribulations, and now you are more focused on what you really want to be doing in life, so something good has come of that mess up!
In reality, failure is a harsh word that perhaps should not be used. So-called failure leads to success elsewhere. Thus its all part of the same process – failure is success because if you keep pushing you inevitably gain success in one way or another.
I think I will get rid of that word from my vocabulary from now on because it has deeply negative connotations, and that’s not what we want. Again, so-called failure is often a success to someone else. We just need to try to change our perception.
I sure appreciate your support Rick, thanks a ton!
And regards you being a “book writer” with your comments – your emails are even worse
Joseph,
Yes you’re right about the emails. I’m sorry, I’m a talker as well. It’s a birth defect… LAUGHING
You know, I’ve never looked at the word failure like that. A very good point and well put. I think you’re right, I’m no longer going to use it either. I guess the thought that came to mind when my work began to pay off was that I had previously failed, but now am succeeding. In reality, I should say that I learned what wasn’t working so well and made adjustments to success. I like that better.
Thanks again Joseph!
Rick, yes – its all about “breeding” this sense of goodness into our minds which inevitably means we re-program the negatives to being much more positive and thus live a much more fulfilling life regardless our circumstances in life change or not. Its surprising what you can achieve when you change your perspective.
